Rompicollo is the flagship red wine of Poggio al Tufo, the Tommasi family's first estate outside their native Valpolicella Classica, purchased in 1997 in Pitigliano in the province of Grosseto. The wine is produced from a blend of Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon grown in volcanic soils rich in calcium carbonate tufa, giving it a distinctive mineral character. Fermented in stainless steel and aged for one year in large 65-hectoliter Slavonian oak casks, it presents 13% alcohol by volume and contains sulfites.
The wine delivers an intense bouquet of mature red berries, blackberry, cherry, and raspberry with notes of black pepper, spice, and a touch of earthy complexity. On the palate it is well-balanced with good structure, rich and supple tannins, and a long fruit-, spice-, and mineral-filled finish. It earned 31st place in Wine Spectator's Top 100 Wines of 2014, and carries a 3.8 rating from over 10,000 Vivino users. Best paired with beef, lamb, veal, poultry, and cured meats.
