Castello Banfi Brunello di Montalcino DOCG is a prestigious red wine from Montalcino in southern Tuscany, Italy — the first wine region in Italy to be accorded DOCG status, a designation that reflects its exceptional quality and aging potential. Crafted entirely from 100% Sangiovese grapes grown in stony, calcareous, well-structured soils at 720 feet above sea level, this Brunello represents over three decades of Castello Banfi's pioneering research into the finest Sangiovese clones.
The winemaking process begins with meticulous grape selection followed by vinification with skin contact for 10 to 12 days. The wine is released in the fifth year after harvest, having aged for a minimum of four years, including two years in oak barrels of various sizes — predominantly French oak barriques with a portion in Slavonian oak casks. This extended aging yields a wine of remarkable complexity and structure built for long cellaring.
On the nose, the bouquet is ethereal and fragrant with violet, vanilla, and hints of licorice. Recent vintages show abundant violets and roses alongside cherries and pomegranates. The palate is full, soft, and velvety with traces of spice, firm yet silky tannins, vibrant freshness, and a long, graceful finish. Wine Spectator awarded the 2020 vintage 92 points, noting aromas of graphite, cherry, blackberry, pomegranate, and wet earth with a powerful, focused structure best from 2029 through 2045. James Suckling awarded the 2020 vintage 93 points and the 2021 vintage 94 points. Wine Advocate awarded both the 2020 and 2021 vintages 93 points.
This wine pairs beautifully with red meats, wild game, and aged cheeses. Available in a 750ml bottle with 14% alcohol by volume.
