Hunnyz apples are a modern American variety developed by the Auvil Fruit Company in Washington state, created from a cross between CrimsonCrisp and Honeycrisp apples. These large, bi-colored apples feature a bright red to crimson blush over yellow skin with a crisp, dense, and exceptionally juicy texture. The apples offer a balanced sweet-tart flavor with honey-like, tangy, and subtly fruity notes.
Hunnyz apples are versatile for both fresh and cooked preparations. They have a slow oxidation rate, making them ideal for salads, charcuterie boards, and breakfast toppings. The variety excels in fresh eating, slicing for snacks, or juicing for beverages. They can also be baked into pies, tarts, muffins, bread, or cooked into sauces, apple butter, jams, and chutneys. The apples pair well with cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, vanilla, maple syrup, and meats such as pork and poultry.
Hunnyz apples are a source of potassium, fiber, and calcium, along with vitamins C, E, and A. The dark red blush indicates the presence of anthocyanins, natural antioxidants that protect cells against oxidative stress. Harvested mid-season from mid-September through November, these apples are exclusively grown and marketed through the Gee Whiz brand by Auvil Fruit Company.
