Premium Rainier cherries are a unique sweet cherry variety known for their distinctive golden yellow skin with red, orange, and pink blush. These cherries offer an exceptionally sweet flavor with hints of honey, peaches, and a caramel-like finish, with sugar content ranging from 17 to 28 Brix. The flesh is tender, semi-firm, and creamy yellow, sometimes streaked with red. Developed in 1952 by Washington State researchers who crossed Bing and Van cherry varieties, Rainier cherries are primarily grown in the Pacific Northwest.
These cherries are an excellent source of nutrition, providing essential vitamins and minerals including vitamin C and potassium, along with B vitamins, vitamin K, iron, magnesium, and phosphorus. They contain anthocyanins with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that help protect cells from damage. The dietary fiber supports healthy blood cholesterol levels, bowel regularity, and gut health. Perfect for fresh eating, salads, baking, or pairing with yogurt and oatmeal.
Nutrition per cup (without pits): 86 calories, 22g carbohydrates (3g fiber), negligible fat, good source of vitamin C and potassium. Season runs mid-June through mid-August in Washington State.
