Chateau St. Jean Cinq Cépages is a prestigious Bordeaux-style red blend from Sonoma County, California. "Cinq Cépages" is French for "five grapes," reflecting the wine's composition of the five classic Bordeaux varietals: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and Petit Verdot. This flagship wine from Chateau St. Jean is one of California's most celebrated Meritage blends, earning iconic status when the 1996 vintage received a perfect 100-point score from Wine Spectator magazine.
The wine is crafted from select vineyard blocks across Sonoma County, with an emphasis on Alexander Valley fruit. It is aged in French oak barrels to develop complexity, structure, and a signature velvety texture. Expect deep, concentrated flavors of blackcurrant, dark cherry, and plum, layered with notes of cedar, tobacco, dark chocolate, and spice. The wine offers firm but polished tannins, vibrant acidity, and a long, elegant finish.
Chateau St. Jean has been producing wine in Sonoma County since 1973. The estate is known for its meticulous vineyard sourcing and winemaking precision, consistently earning high scores from major wine publications. Cinq Cépages is best enjoyed with grilled lamb, braised short ribs, aged cheeses, or hearty pasta dishes. Decanting for 30–60 minutes before serving is recommended to fully open the wine's bouquet.
