Chateau du Tertre is a Fifth Growth (Cinquieme Grand Cru Classe) Bordeaux red wine from the prestigious Margaux appellation, classified in the historic 1855 Bordeaux Classification. The estate spans a 54-hectare single contiguous block in Margaux, planted on gravel and sand soils with vines averaging 40 years in age. Since 2008, the estate has been transitioning to biodynamic farming practices.
The wine is a classic Margaux blend of approximately 43% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot, 19% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Petit Verdot, though the exact proportions vary by vintage. It is aged for 18 months in 50% new French oak, using a combination of wood tanks, concrete vats, cement eggs, and stainless steel vessels. Production is approximately 16,500 cases per year.
Tasting notes vary by vintage but typically feature dried florals, dark red pit fruits, cedar, spice, and earthy forest notes, with polished tannins and a savory finish. Recent vintages have earned 91–93 point scores from major critics. The wine benefits from at least 10 years of bottle age and peaks between 10 and 25 years. Young vintages should be decanted for 1–2 hours before serving at approximately 60°F (15.5°C). It pairs well with beef, lamb, veal, duck, mushrooms, and aged cheese.
