Dr. Loosen Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese is a celebrated German Riesling from the legendary Sonnenuhr ("sundial") vineyard in the village of Wehlen, in the Mosel wine region of Germany. The estate is led by Ernst Loosen, one of the Mosel's most acclaimed winemakers, and this Spätlese-classified wine is widely regarded as a benchmark expression of the region's signature grape.
The Wehlener Sonnenuhr vineyard is planted on precipitously steep slopes of ancient blue slate rock, which imparts a distinctive, racy mineral quality to the wine. The Spätlese designation — meaning "late harvest" in German — indicates that the grapes were picked at optimal ripeness, yielding an off-dry style that balances lush fruit with vibrant acidity. Expect aromas and flavors of ripe peach, green apple, Asian pear, lemon, and cantaloupe, accented by delicate floral notes of honeysuckle and jasmine and a long, minerally finish.
This wine pairs exceptionally well with spicy Asian cuisines such as Thai, Vietnamese, and Indian dishes, as well as shellfish, roasted poultry, pork, and soft creamy cheeses. It is also an ideal sipping wine on its own. Consistently receives high critical scores, including 94 points from James Suckling. Sold as a 750ml bottle.
