Nikka Miyagikyo 12 Year is a single malt Japanese whisky from the Miyagikyo Distillery, nestled in a lush river valley in Miyagi prefecture, northeastern Japan. The distillery was founded in 1969 by Masataka Taketsuru — widely regarded as the father of Japanese whisky — and is celebrated for producing elegant, fruit-forward malts using pot stills heated by indirect steam, a method that yields the distillery's signature delicate mouthfeel and pronounced fruitiness.
This 12-year age-stated expression is crafted from light-peated and non-peated malted barley, matured for twelve years in a combination of ex-bourbon and sherry casks. The bourbon cask aging imparts notes of honey, pear, apricot, vanilla, and fresh grapefruit, while a carefully balanced sherry cask influence adds depth with subtle dried berry and gentle spice. On the palate, flavors of honey, roasted biscuit, pear, clove, and black pepper emerge, leading to a smooth and lingering finish with warm oak and fruit.
Bottled at 45% ABV in a 750ml bottle, the Miyagikyo 12 Year represents one of the original age-stated expressions from this revered distillery. The 12-year expression was discontinued around 2015–2016 when Nikka transitioned its single malt lineup to non-age-stated bottlings, making this a sought-after collector's release among Japanese whisky enthusiasts.
