The Akashi White Oak Blended Japanese Whisky is the flagship entry-level expression from Eigashima Shuzo's White Oak Distillery, located in Akashi City along the shores of the Seto Inland Sea in Hyogo Prefecture, Japan. Founded in 1888 as a sake brewery, Eigashima Shuzo became the first distillery in Japan to obtain a whisky license in 1919 โ four years before Suntory's famed Yamazaki Distillery. This historic distillery crafts a blend that represents outstanding value in authentic Japanese whisky.
The whisky is made from a blend of 70% corn grain and 30% lightly-peated malted barley, aged for at least three years in used bourbon barrels and then finished in sherry casks, bottled at 40% ABV. On the nose, aromas of caramel corn, coconut shell, and delicate peat smoke emerge. The palate opens with toast, raw oats, golden apple, lemon zest, and dried apricot, giving way to white pepper, caramel, dark chocolate, and vanilla, with savory sherry undertones rounding out the smooth, lingering finish.
Best enjoyed on the rocks, with a splash of water (mizuwari style), or as a Japanese highball with quality mineral water. Also pairs beautifully as the base for a Boulevardier, Manhattan, or Penicillin cocktail.
