Sordo Barolo Gabutti is a prestigious single-vineyard red wine from the legendary Gabutti cru in Serralunga d'Alba, Piedmont, Italy. Produced by Azienda Agricola Giovanni Sordo—a family winery founded in 1912 and now in its third generation under Giorgio Sordo—this wine is crafted from 100% Nebbiolo grapes grown on vines approximately 50 years in age. The Gabutti vineyard sits on the Lequio Formation, a calcareous-clay marl from the Langhian Stage of the Miocene Epoch, which imparts the legendary structure, power, and minerality that define Serralunga d'Alba Barolos. The wine holds the DOCG designation, Italy's highest quality classification for wine.
The fruit is crushed and destemmed, then fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats with long submerged-cap maceration lasting 4 to 7 weeks. Natural malolactic fermentation follows at 68°F. The wine is then aged for 24 months in large traditional Slavonian oak casks (botti), followed by 5 months in stainless steel and a minimum of 6 months in the bottle before release.
Deep garnet red in color with an intensely aromatic bouquet of roses, ripe cherry, plum, tobacco, leather, licorice, and delicate touches of spice and vanilla. On the palate it is robust and enveloping, with beautifully integrated tannins, lively acidity, and a long, complex aromatic finish. The wine has received critical scores of 90–94 points from Wine Spectator, James Suckling, Decanter, and Wine Advocate across multiple vintages, including a 94-point score from Wine Spectator for the 2013 vintage.
Best enjoyed at 18–20°C after decanting for at least one hour to fully express its character. Ideal pairings include red meat roasts, braised game, and aged cheeses. Excellent cellaring potential of 5 to 15 years from vintage.
