This 6-inch potted orchid garden features Phalaenopsis orchids, commonly known as moth orchids, delivered in a 1.4 quart (1.32 liter) container. Phalaenopsis orchids are prized for their elegant, long-lasting blooms that can persist for a month or more with proper care. These tropical orchids naturally grow on tree trunks and branches, sending out aerial roots that may sprawl outside the container, which is perfectly normal growth behavior.
These orchids thrive in bright, indirect light from an east or west window and prefer temperatures between 70-85°F during the day with nighttime temperatures above 60°F. To encourage reblooming, expose the plant to cooler night temperatures (55-60°F) for several weeks in autumn. Water thoroughly when the potting medium feels nearly dry, typically once per week, allowing excess water to drain completely. The aerial roots will turn from dull silver to pale green when properly hydrated.
Plant in a porous, well-draining medium such as bark-based orchid mix to prevent root rot. Maintain humidity levels between 50-80% by placing the pot on a tray of gravel partially filled with water, ensuring the pot does not sit directly in water. Fertilize every third or fourth watering during active growth with orchid-specific fertilizer, reducing feeding during winter months. Repot every 1-2 years in fresh bark mix when the medium begins to decompose or when the plant outgrows its container.
