Fresh whole pomegranates sold in a pack of 4 weighing approximately 4 pounds total. These ruby-red fruits are known for their sweet-tart flavor and jewel-like arils (seeds) that burst with juice. Costco typically carries Wonderful variety pomegranates, and seasonally may offer the SweetHeart variety which features softer seeds and a sweeter, lower-acid flavor profile.
Pomegranates are a nutrient-dense fruit rich in powerful antioxidants called punicalagins, which have been shown to have three times the antioxidant activity of red wine and green tea. A medium pomegranate (approximately 5 oz edible portion) contains about 100 calories and provides roughly 40% of the daily requirement for Vitamin C along with beneficial fiber from the whole seeds. The fruit is also a good source of folate, potassium, and Vitamin K.
Research suggests pomegranates support heart health by helping maintain healthy cholesterol levels and blood flow. The antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds may also benefit brain health, gut health, and joint function. Best enjoyed fresh by removing the arils and eating them as a snack, adding to salads, or using as a garnish. Peak season runs from October through January.
