Costco's Tuscan Melon is the Dulcinea Tuscan Style™ cantaloupe, a premium variety first introduced in 2004 by Dulcinea Farms LLC. Each pack contains 2 whole melons, grown exclusively by Dulcinea Farms in California, Arizona, and Guatemala, allowing for near year-round availability. The seeds were developed by Syngenta Seeds of Basel, Switzerland using a proprietary Italian variety, and farming is facilitated in partnership with Tanimura & Antle Inc.
Tuscan Style cantaloupes are distinguished by their golden tan, roughly netted exterior with prominent ribbed grooves that transition from dark green to golden-cream as the melon ripens. Dark green grooves signal a sweet, firm-fleshed fruit, while a lighter golden tone indicates a softer texture and deeper cantaloupe flavor. Underneath the thin rind, the flesh is dense, thick, and bright orange with a small central seed cavity. What sets this melon apart is its extraordinary sweetness: Dulcinea Tuscan Style cantaloupes measure 14 to 16 Brix, compared to the 9 to 10 Brix typical of conventional cantaloupes. When ripe, they emit a strong, pleasant musky aroma. These melons are an excellent source of folate, vitamin C, and antioxidants.
