Château Pontet-Canet 2019 is a Fifth Growth (5ème Grand Cru Classé) Pauillac from the Left Bank of Bordeaux, France, produced by one of the appellation's most celebrated estates. The property is renowned for its commitment to biodynamic viticulture, with all sorting and destemming performed entirely by hand using manual punchdowns — no motorized equipment.
The 2019 vintage is a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot, fermented over approximately 21 days with malolactic conversion completed in the fermentation vats. The wine was then aged for 16–18 months in a combination of 45% new French oak barrels, 15% one-year-old barrels, and 40% limestone amphorae crafted from stone sourced from the estate's own vineyard soil — a distinctive winemaking technique that reconnects the wine with its terroir.
On the nose, the 2019 offers gorgeous lifted perfume of lilacs, dark chocolate, Morello cherries, crème de cassis, and wilted roses, with secondary notes of spice box, iron ore, Ceylon tea, and underbrush. The palate is rich, concentrated, and seductive, with plush, fine-grained tannins and a racy mineral backbone. The finish is long and layered. Drinking window: 2024–2034.
