Presumed Innocent is a landmark legal thriller by Scott Turow, published by Hachette Book Group. First published in 1987, it is the book that launched Scott Turow's career as one of America's preeminent legal thriller authors and helped define the modern courtroom drama genre.
The story follows Rożat "Rusty" Sabich, a deputy prosecuting attorney who becomes the prime suspect in the brutal murder of his colleague and former lover, Carolyn Polhemus. Told in first person, the novel plunges readers into the murky intersections of law, justice, and personal morality as Rusty must navigate a prosecution led by his own office. Turow draws on his experience as a practicing attorney to craft a narrative filled with meticulous legal procedure, moral ambiguity, and psychological tension that keeps readers guessing until the final pages.
The novel spawned the acclaimed 1990 film adaptation starring Harrison Ford, and more recently a 2024 Apple TV+ limited series. It is the first book in Turow's Kindle County Legal Thriller series, followed by the 2010 sequel Innocent.
