Women and Children First is a literary fiction novel by debut author Alina Grabowski. Set in Nashquitten, Massachusetts, a fictional seaside town, the novel tells the story of a teenager named Lucy Anderson who dies under mysterious circumstances at a party after a video clip of her having a seizure circulates on social media. The novel is structured through ten distinct perspectives, split between "Pre" and "Post" Lucy's death, each narrated by a different girl or woman in the community who is connected to Lucy in some way. Through these interwoven narratives, the book explores themes of grief, interconnectedness, female relationships, and how communities can both support and fail women and girls. Published by SJP Lit (an imprint founded by Sarah Jessica Parker) in May 2024, this 336-page hardcover (ISBN 9781638930785) has been praised for its sharp, propulsive storytelling and its examination of how women navigate systems of male privilege, betrayal, and the complicated bonds between mothers and daughters.
