Ex Post Facto is a bold, cool-climate Syrah crafted by renowned winemaker Greg Brewer, best known for his work at Brewer-Clifton. This project represents a deliberate departure from his Burgundian roots, channeling his passion for Rhône-style wines made from grapes grown in the Santa Rita Hills AVA of Santa Barbara County, California. The name "Ex Post Facto" — Latin for a law that retroactively changes the rules — reflects Brewer's intent to step outside his established paradigm and explore something new.
The Santa Rita Hills appellation is celebrated for its east-west transverse valleys that funnel cool Pacific Ocean air inland, producing grapes with remarkable acidity and structure. This Syrah exhibits classic cool-climate character: aromas of cracked black pepper, tar, elderberry, raw lamb, and graham cracker on the nose, with a dense and savory palate. It is inspired by the great wines of the northern Rhône valley in France, particularly Syrahs from appellations like Cornas and Crozes-Hermitage.
Sold as a 750ML bottle, this wine is well-suited for pairing with roasted lamb, grilled meats, game birds, or aged hard cheeses. It benefits from decanting before service and has aging potential of 8–12 years from vintage.
