The Elephant Mango is a prized Vietnamese mango variety (Mangifera indica), celebrated for its extraordinary size — averaging 0.5 to 1 kilogram per fruit, making it three to four times larger than standard commercial mango cultivars. Also known as Xoài Tượng (Xoai Tuong) in Vietnamese, this jumbo mango features an elongated, oval to oblong shape with a slight natural curve and blunt tapering ends.
When ripe, the smooth, leathery skin transforms from green to a rich golden-yellow hue. Beneath the exterior, the flesh is dense, fibreless, and succulently tender, ranging from pale yellow to deep orange depending on ripeness. The flesh surrounds a notably small, flat seed, giving this variety an exceptional flesh-to-seed ratio. The flavor is rich, sweet, and tropical, with a fragrant floral aroma. Elephant mangoes are often marketed as a "sharing mango" due to their impressive size — perfect for slicing and enjoying with family.
Elephant Mangoes can be enjoyed at multiple stages of maturity. Eat them out of hand as a fresh snack, dice into mango salsa, blend into smoothies or a creamy mango lassi, slice over avocado toast, or serve with coconut sticky rice for dessert. They pair well with cilantro, Thai basil, mint, lime juice, coconut, and chili. To ripen, store at room temperature or place in a paper bag and check daily. A ripe Elephant Mango yields gently to pressure, similar to a ripe avocado. Once ripe, refrigerate and consume within a few days for peak flavor.
