Château de Rouanne Vinsobres is a red wine from the southern Rhône Valley of France, produced at a historic estate centered around a 12th-century medieval castle built on a classified Roman site. The estate takes its name from "Rugius," the reputed original Roman owner, and encompasses 177 acres (72 hectares) including 153 acres of vines. Since 2019, the estate has been owned and managed by Louis Barruol, also the winemaker behind Château de Saint Cosme.
The wine is crafted from a single, unified vineyard block of 50+ year-old vines — a selection massale of Grenache (50%), Syrah (40%), and Mourvèdre (10%) — grown on ancient limestone and sandy marl soils of Pliocene origin at 984 feet elevation with southeastern exposure. Fermentation uses 100% whole bunches and indigenous yeasts to express the character of the terroir. The wine is aged for 16 months in concrete vats, then bottled unfined and unfiltered for a direct, pure expression of the vineyard.
Tasting notes include raspberry, violet, licorice, peony, black pepper, and gingerbread, with prominent saltiness and length in the finish. The wine pairs well with tomato-based dishes such as ratatouille, as well as lamb, venison, and beef. It is certified organic through Ecocert, with 14.9% alcohol and 1.15 g/L residual sugar. The wine has received 93-point scores from multiple critics including James Suckling and Wine Enthusiast.
