Felsina "Rancia" Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG is one of Tuscany's most celebrated single-vineyard wines, produced by Fattoria di Felsina in Castelnuovo Berardenga. This 3-liter double magnum format offers an exceptional aging vessel for this benchmark Chianti Classico Riserva. First produced in 1983, Rancia is named after the ancient estate that stands on the site of a former Benedictine monastery.
Made from 100% Sangiovese grapes sourced from the Rancia vineyard, situated at elevations between 350 and 400 meters above sea level in the heart of the Chianti Classico zone. The soils are calcareous, composed primarily of alberese and galestro — the classic rocky terrain of the Chianti Classico district. Vines are cultivated at 5,400 plants per hectare with Guyot cordon training, and all fruit is hand-harvested typically in early October.
Winemaking begins with traditional fermentation at 28–30°C in stainless steel tanks, with 16–20 days of maceration using automated punch-downs and daily pump-overs. The wine is then aged 18–20 months in new French oak barriques, followed by a minimum of 6–8 months of bottle aging before release. The result is a ruby-red wine with good color intensity, complex aromas of spice, florals, red and black small fruits, mineral notes, and a light toasted hint. On the palate, young and consistent tannins give way to a tight, vibrant finish with excellent acidity.
Rancia has consistently earned top accolades from the world's leading critics, including scores of 94–97 from Wine Advocate, Wine Spectator, James Suckling, Decanter, and Vinous across numerous vintages.
