The Caribbean Red Papaya, also known as the Maradol papaya, is a large tropical fruit native to Mexico and Central America. These elongated, cylindrical fruits typically weigh 3 to 5 pounds and measure 30 to 35 centimeters in length. The thin, leathery skin transitions from green-speckled yellow to a deep orange as the fruit reaches full ripeness.

Inside, the flesh is a vibrant salmon-pink to red color with a firm yet soft texture. The flavor is juicy, mildly sweet, and tropical with a pleasant musky aroma. The small, shiny black seeds found in the center are edible and carry a spicy, black pepper-like taste. Each papaya is sold individually and sourced from Guatemala.

Caribbean Red Papayas are excellent enjoyed fresh — simply halve the fruit, scoop out the seeds, and eat the flesh with a spoon. They are equally well-suited to smoothies, fruit salads, salsas, and desserts. The juice can be used in dressings and marinades, and the papain enzyme in the flesh makes it an effective natural meat tenderizer. A squeeze of lime or lemon juice enhances the tropical flavor beautifully. Store at room temperature to ripen; once ripe, refrigerate and consume within 2 to 3 days.

The fruit is exceptionally nutrient-dense, providing high levels of vitamins A and C, beta-carotene, potassium, and folate, along with vitamins E, K, and all B-complex vitamins. It also contains papain, a natural digestive enzyme, plus calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, copper, manganese, and selenium. Caribbean Red Papayas are available year-round with a peak season from late fall through spring.
