Wild-caught brown shrimp sold by the pound from the fresh seafood section at Costco. The "U-12" designation means fewer than 12 shrimp per pound, making these extra-colossal in size — among the largest shrimp available at retail. These are whole, raw shrimp that have been previously frozen and thawed for convenience in the seafood case.
Brown shrimp (Farfantepenaeus aztecus) are prized for their rich, slightly briny flavor and firm texture. Wild-caught shrimp are generally considered superior to farm-raised in terms of taste and sustainability. At this size, they are ideal for grilling, broiling, stuffing, or preparing as an impressive shrimp cocktail centerpiece. The large size means less peeling work per pound and a meatier bite.
As with all previously frozen seafood at Costco, the shrimp have been deveined and are ready to peel and cook. Best used within 1–2 days of purchase or refrozen promptly.
