Joseph Drouhin 1er Cru Pinot Noir Clos des Mouches 750ML

Joseph Drouhin Beaune Premier Cru Clos des Mouches Rouge is a prestigious Burgundy Pinot Noir from one of the most celebrated vineyards in the Beaune appellation. The Drouhin family has owned this iconic vineyard since the 1920s, when Maurice Drouhin assembled 41 parcels from 8 proprietors to create the largest holding in the Clos des Mouches at 14 hectares.

The vineyard sits at mid-slope at the southern end of Beaune, next to Pommard, with an east/south-east exposure. The name "Clos des Mouches" refers to the beehives that once occupied this sun-drenched enclosure, with bees called "mouches à miel" (honey flies) in the local dialect. The soil is clay and limestone, with rocky composition in the upper vineyard and limestone-marl at the center, contributing to the wine's renowned finesse.

This wine displays a deep ruby color with bright sheen. The nose offers intense, fresh aromas of Morello cherry, raspberry, and blackberry, with hints of smoky complexity evolving toward liquorice. On the palate, the texture is fleshy with firm but refined body, supported by silky tannins. With age, it develops velvety roundness and precise architecture. Grapes are hand-harvested and vinified with indigenous yeasts, then aged 14 to 18 months in French oak barrels including 25% new oak. Maison Joseph Drouhin has practiced organic viticulture since the late 1980s and biodynamic methods since the 1990s. Optimal consumption is 10 to 20 years from vintage, with ageing potential up to 25 years. Serve at 16°C (61-62°F).
