Château Trotanoy is one of the most celebrated estates in the Pomerol appellation of Bordeaux, France. The vineyard was first planted in 1761 and has been owned and managed by the Moueix family (Établissements Jean-Pierre Moueix) since 1953, making it a neighbor of the legendary Petrus on the Pomerol plateau. The estate's 7.6-hectare vineyard is planted predominantly to Merlot (88%) with the remainder in Cabernet Franc, grown on a distinctive terroir of rich black clay with gravel and iron-rich deposits.
The wine is vinified in traditional temperature-controlled concrete vats and aged for 18 to 20 months in French oak barrels (40–50% new oak). Expect a deeply concentrated, opulent profile featuring aromas of black cherries, plums, dark chocolate, truffles, espresso, and violets, with a velvet-textured palate and silky, long finish. Annual production is limited to approximately 2,250 cases per year, contributing to the wine's prestige and collectibility.
Château Trotanoy is best enjoyed after at least a decade of cellaring, with top vintages capable of evolving beautifully for 40 to 50 years. Decanting for 2–3 hours is recommended for younger vintages. Serve at approximately 60°F (15.5°C) and pair with classic meat dishes, roasted or braised lamb, duck, game, veal, or earthy preparations featuring mushrooms and truffles.
