Chateau de Nalys is a historic estate in the Chateauneuf-du-Pape appellation of France's Southern Rhone Valley, acquired in 2017 by the renowned Guigal family of Domaine Guigal. The estate spans 50 hectares and practices certified organic viticulture across three distinct parcels — La Crau, Nalys, and Bois Senechal — encompassing the diversity of soils that define the appellation.
This red Chateauneuf-du-Pape is crafted from a blend led by approximately 60% Grenache and 30% Syrah, complemented by Mourvèdre, Counoise, and Vaccarèse, drawing on up to all 13 permitted grape varieties of the appellation. The wine is fermented in oak vats and aged 18 months in a combination of large oak demi-muids and concrete vessels, yielding a wine of elegance and structure.
On the palate, expect layers of black plum, ripe raspberry, blueberry, and sweet cherries, underscored by notes of garrigue, licorice, earth, and minerality. The tannins are silky and the finish is long and refined. The 2018 vintage was recognized as one of the finest expressions of the appellation, earning a #10 ranking on Wine Spectator's Top 100 list for 2021, with scores of 97 points from Wine Enthusiast and 95 points from Wine Spectator, Jeb Dunnuck, and Wine & Spirits.
