Y. Rousseau Son of a Butcher is a full-bodied California red blend crafted by winemaker Yannick Rousseau, whose father was a butcher in France — lending the wine both its name and the portrait on the label. Yannick draws on his roots in the Gascony and Madiran regions of Southwest France, where Tannat is king, bringing an artisan, Old World approach to his California winemaking.

The blend is composed of 30% Tannat, 30% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Malbec, 5% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Petite Sirah, aged for 18 months in a combination of 20% new and 80% neutral French oak barrels. The nose is bright and complex, offering baked blackberry pie, dry sage, white pepper, licorice, medium-roast coffee, forest floor, and subtle oak. On the palate it delivers a supple attack with full-bodied character, sweet spices, pure dark berries, silky tannins, and a fresh, long finish. Pairs beautifully with grilled and roasted meats, charcuterie, aged cheeses, and hearty stews.
