Château Haut-Bages Libéral is a prestigious Fifth Growth (Cinquième Cru) classified estate in Pauillac, Bordeaux, France. Recognized in the historic 1855 Bordeaux Classification, the 30-hectare estate sits with vineyards neighboring the legendary Château Latour and Château Pichon Baron in the heart of the Médoc peninsula. The property has been owned by the Taillan group since 1983 and is managed by Claire Villars-Lurton, who has significantly elevated the estate's reputation for quality.
The wine is crafted primarily from Cabernet Sauvignon (typically 75–80%) blended with Merlot (20–25%), and fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel and cement vats before aging for 14 to 18 months in French oak barrels, approximately 40% of which are new. Since 2018, a portion of the wine is also aged in amphora, adding textural complexity. The result is a structured, age-worthy Pauillac expressing aromas of dark currants, blackberries, tobacco leaf, cedar, cigar box, flowers, and mint. On the palate it delivers fresh, chewy dark fruit with mineral character and a long finish.
This wine rewards patience: it benefits from at least 6 to 10 years of bottle aging and reaches peak maturity between 10 and 20 years after the vintage. Young bottles should be decanted for 2 to 3 hours before serving to allow the wine to open fully.
