Fèlsina Fontalloro is the flagship Sangiovese from Fattoria di Fèlsina, one of Tuscany's most celebrated estates located in Castelnuovo Berardenga on the southern edge of the Chianti Classico zone. This 100% Sangiovese is designated as Indicazione Geografica Tipica (IGT) Toscana, sourced from select hillside vineyards straddling the Chianti Classico and Chianti Colli Senesi denominations at elevations between 330 and 407 meters above sea level. The vineyards feature diverse soils — stony and calcareous on the Chianti Classico side, and sandy, loamy, and silty with marine sediments on the Crete Senesi side — contributing to the wine's complexity.
After hand harvesting in two phases to select only the finest grapes, the must undergoes fermentation and maceration in stainless steel for 16 to 20 days at controlled temperatures with programmed punchdowns and pumpovers. The wine is then aged in new and once-used French oak barrels for 18 to 22 months, followed by a minimum of 8 to 12 months of bottle aging before release. This extended aging process produces a wine of exceptional depth and structure.
Fontalloro presents a deep ruby red color with intense aromas of aromatic herbs, tobacco, wet earth, black currant, and licorice. On the palate, it shows good consistency with medium-smooth tannins, rich structure, and an elegant finish. Since its debut vintage in 1983, Fontalloro has consistently earned top scores from major critics including Wine Advocate, Wine Spectator, James Suckling, and Vinous, with recent vintages scoring in the 93 to 98 range. Sold in cases of 12 x 750ml bottles.
