Passopisciaro Passorosso is a single-varietal red wine made from 100% Nerello Mascalese grown on 70 to 100-year-old, bush-trained vines on the northern slopes of Mount Etna in Sicily, Italy. The grapes are sourced from multiple contrade (individual vineyard sites) including Malpasso, Guardiola, Santo Spirito, Favazza, and Arcuria, situated between 550 and 1,000 meters above sea level on the volcano's mineral-rich, volcanic soils.
The winery, Passopisciaro, was founded by Andrea Franchetti in 2000 and played a pivotal role in bringing worldwide recognition to Etna's wines. Passorosso is the estate's flagship bottling, designed as a holistic expression of Mount Etna's diverse terroir by blending fruit from multiple contrade at varying altitudes. The wine is fermented on the skins, aged in large neutral oak barrels, and bottled unfiltered to preserve its natural character.
The wine displays vibrant red fruit aromas of ripe cherry, dried flowers, and aromatic herbs, with hints of cardamom, white pepper, and a distinctive mineral, ferrous quality from the volcanic soils. On the palate it is elegant and structured, with earthy, herbaceous notes and a long, spice-driven finish. With age, the wine develops exotic aromatics of camphor, sandalwood, and complex spice while softening in color intensity.
