Château Ducru-Beaucaillou is a legendary Second Growth estate in Saint-Julien, Médoc, Bordeaux, classified in the prestigious 1855 Classification and widely regarded as a "Super Second." The estate takes its name from the beautiful large stones — "beaucaillou" — that characterize its terroir. Under the stewardship of the Borie family since 1941, and Bruno Borie since 2003, Ducru-Beaucaillou has reached its modern zenith with a succession of exceptional vintages.
The 2018 vintage is composed of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Merlot, harvested from 75 hectares of vines averaging 35 years of age. The wine was aged 18 to 20 months in 75–90% new French oak barrels. It presents a deep purple-black color with an opulent nose of baked black cherries, blackberry preserves, crème de cassis, menthol, pencil lead, cedar, and Indian spices. On the palate it is medium to full-bodied with impactful black fruits, exotic spice layering, firm ripe grainy tannins, and exceptional freshness. This vintage earned 99 points from The Wine Cellar Insider and scores of 98 from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate and 100 from Wine Enthusiast. It is not expected to approach peak drinkability before 2028 and has a cellaring horizon of 18 to 50 years. This 3-liter double-magnum format offers ideal aging conditions, as larger formats age more gracefully and slowly than standard bottles.
Beginning with the 2018 vintage, the estate converted to 100% organic farming. The wine should be served at 15.5°C (60°F) and decanted for 3–4 hours. It pairs beautifully with classic meat dishes including veal, lamb, duck, and beef, as well as roast chicken, tuna, salmon, mushrooms, and pasta.
