Château Léoville Barton is a Second Grand Cru Classé (2ème Cru Classé) from the 1855 Bordeaux Classification, estate in Saint-Julien, Médoc, France, presented here in a 3-liter double magnum format. The property has been in continuous Barton family ownership since 1855, making it one of only two classified estates still held by its original proprietors.
The wine is produced from 51 hectares of gravelly, clay-subsoil terroir in Saint-Julien, planted primarily to 74% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot, and 3% Cabernet Franc, with vines averaging 30 years of age at 9,000 vines per hectare. Fermentation takes place in large 200-hectoliter traditional wooden vats, followed by aging for approximately 20 months in roughly 50% new French oak barrels.
Château Léoville Barton is known for its sturdy, structured style with firm tannins that require extended cellaring. The wine typically reaches its optimal drinking window between 15 and 30 years after vintage. Recent vintages have received exceptional critical praise, including 97 points for the 2022 and 2018 vintages and 96 points for 2019 and 2020. The 3-liter format is ideal for long-term cellaring and ages particularly gracefully in larger formats.
