Fresh wild-caught whole sockeye salmon, sold by the pound at Costco's meat and seafood department. This premium Pacific salmon is sustainably harvested from Alaskan waters and flash-frozen immediately after being caught to preserve freshness and eliminate parasites. Wild sockeye salmon is prized for its rich, complex classic salmon flavor and firm texture, superior to farm-raised varieties.
The fish features deep red-orange flesh resulting from its natural diet of krill and shrimp, providing authentic color without artificial dyes. Sockeye salmon is leaner than Atlantic salmon with fewer calories and higher protein content while maintaining excellent omega-3 fatty acid levels. The skin-on presentation, when available, is edible and delicious when cooked properly.
Wild sockeye salmon is certified as a sustainable seafood choice by Monterey Bay Aquarium's Seafood Watch program, caught using environmentally responsible methods including gillnets, beach seines, and stow nets. This whole salmon can be portioned and prepared using various cooking methods including baking, pan-frying, grilling, broiling, air frying, or poaching. Cook to an internal temperature of 120-135°F for optimal moisture and flavor, though the FDA recommends 145°F for maximum safety.
