Castello Fonterutoli Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG is the flagship wine of the Castello di Fonterutoli estate, produced by the Mazzei family in Castellina in Chianti, Tuscany, Italy. A pioneer of the Gran Selezione category since 1995, it is a single-vineyard Cru of 100% Sangiovese sourced from the finest parcels surrounding the historic Fonterutoli hamlet at 470 meters above sea level, with south and southwest exposures on "Alberese" limestone-rich soils.
The grapes are hand-harvested beginning in mid-September from vines 25 to 35 years old, trained using spur-cordon and Guyot systems. Vinification takes place in stainless steel trunk-conic vats with 15 to 16 days of maceration at 26–28°C. The wine is then aged 18 months in 500-liter French oak barrels (50% new), followed by 4 months of finissage in concrete tanks before bottling. Alcohol content is approximately 14.66%.
The wine delivers aromas of black cherry, dark raspberry, orange peel, and licorice with a hint of spicy oak. On the palate, it offers juicy dark fruit, toasted nuts, fine tannins, and vibrant limestone-lofted acidity with a long, elegant finish. It has received scores of 97+ points from Gardini Notes, 95 from James Suckling and Falstaff, and 92 from Decanter.
