Château Lynch-Bages 2016 is a celebrated Fifth Growth (Cinquième Grand Cru Classé) red Bordeaux from the prestigious Pauillac appellation on Bordeaux's Left Bank, France. Widely regarded as an overachiever among Fifth Growths, Lynch-Bages consistently performs at Second Growth quality, earning it the nickname "the poor man's Mouton Rothschild." The 2016 vintage is considered one of the finest modern expressions of the estate.
The blend is composed of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot, aged 18 months in 75% new French oak barrels. Deep garnet-purple in color, the wine opens with pronounced notes of cassis, chocolate-covered cherries, mulberries, and menthol, backed by garrigue, tilled soil, and tapenade. On the palate it is medium to full-bodied, rich, and fantastically concentrated, with firm, ripe, grainy tannins layered with pepper, cinnamon, cloves, and a mineral-driven finish. The 2016 also shows graphite, licorice, pencil lead, and cigar box complexity throughout. Alcohol by volume is 13.5%.
Scores from major critics include 97 points from Wine Advocate, 97 from Wine Spectator, 97 from James Suckling, 97 from Vinous Media, 95 from Wine Enthusiast, 95 from Decanter, and 95 from Jeb Dunnuck. The wine is built for the cellar and is best from 2025 through 2040, with 3 to 4 decades of aging potential.
