Chateau Pontet-Canet is a celebrated Fifth Growth (Cinquieme Grand Cru Classe) estate from the 1855 Bordeaux Classification, located in the prestigious Pauillac appellation on the Left Bank of Bordeaux, France. Despite its Fifth Growth classification, the estate consistently outperforms its official ranking and is widely regarded as a "Super Second," frequently receiving perfect scores from major critics and competing with the First Growths of the Medoc.
The wine is a classic Bordeaux blend, typically composed of approximately 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot, drawn from 81 hectares of vines overlying deep gravel soils above clay and limestone. Pontet-Canet is one of only two Bordeaux estates to hold full biodynamic certification from Demeter, farming entirely without synthetic inputs and using draft horses to plow portions of the vineyard. Fermentation is conducted with 24-hour manual monitoring and aging takes place in a combination of 50% new French oak barrels and 35% amphorae crafted from local soils, imparting distinctive minerality and reducing oak dominance.
The 375ml half bottle format offers the same Grand Vin quality in a more accessible size. Expect deep purple-black color with aromas of black cherry, cassis, graphite, cedar, tobacco, and crushed stone. The palate shows concentrated dark fruit, fine-grained tannins, fresh acidity, and a long, structured finish. Top vintages such as 2009 have received perfect 100-point scores from Robert Parker, Laure Panisset, and Jeb Dunnuck simultaneously.
